Keeping Score, Improves the Score

I once asked my college professor for the best business advice he had ever received. His response was, “Keeping score improves the score.”

This advice resonated so much with me that I’ve shared it hundreds of times since.

A score allows you to quantify your performance. It gives insight into how you’re doing today compared to last week, last quarter, or even last year. It offers a benchmark to measure your progress toward your goals and shows where you stand relative to others.

Scores not only indicate what’s working but also highlight areas needing attention. They provide insights about the progress made or any setbacks encountered. Such scores can be attributed to individuals, teams, companies, or entire industries.

The next time you are looking at a dashboard, a report, or a weekly status update, take a moment to reflect on the power of “Keeping score improves the score.”
